Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era

At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. Simply said, we help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers, working together to shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.

Commerce, named a ”Great Place to Work" in Australia, and a “Best Place to Work” in Austin, is looking for a full-time Infrastructure Engineer II to join our team. This position can be fully remote in Australia or hybrid based in Sydney.

As an Infrastructure Engineer at Commerce, you'll work as part of our Infrastructure Engineering team, to design and build the systems that keep our Commerce platform reliable, scalable, and efficient. Our Infrastructure Engineering team consists of a talented group of individuals who specialize not only in web operations and systems administration, but also software engineering.

We’re looking for an experienced candidate who brings a blended set of skills for software engineering and web operations to our team. This role shares similarities with DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering roles, emphasizing collaboration between software and infrastructure.

Currently you’ll find us predominantly working in Golang, Python, Ruby and PHP backed by Puppet for configuration management and Terraform for infrastructure management/provisioning. We operate remote-first and prioritize team over individuals; value innovative problem solving and strive for operational efficiency.

BigCommerce, part of the Commerce brand family, helps merchants increase sales at every stage of their growth. From small startups to mid-market businesses and large enterprises, we provide the leading e-commerce platform. Our customers can then concentrate on what's most important: growing their businesses. We enable our customers to build, innovate, and grow, collectively reshaping the e-commerce industry.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build, maintain, and improve the infrastructure that powers Commerce’s platform

  • Apply software engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles to automate, monitor, and scale our systems

  • Collaborate closely with other engineers to connect infrastructure and application layers

  • Use infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Puppet) to manage configuration and provisioning

  • Contribute to system observability using metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting tools

  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues in partnership with Engineering and Support teams

  • Participate in our on-call rotation to help maintain platform reliability

  • Continuously look for opportunities to simplify, optimize, and improve how we work

Who You Are:

You’re someone who enjoys solving complex infrastructure problems through code. You might come from a software engineering background with a growing interest in operations — or vice versa. Most importantly, you’re collaborative, curious, and eager to learn.

  • 3–5 years of experience supporting or developing large-scale Linux-based web environments

  • Education: Preferred Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience or completed either a comprehensive software engineering boot camp

  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages (e.g., Golang, Ruby, Python, PHP, Bash)

  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes, Nomad, ECS, or GKE)

  • Familiarity with configuration management (e.g., Puppet, Chef, or Ansible)

  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, or Deployment Manager)

  • Knowledge of observability tools (e.g., ELK, Prometheus, Datadog, Sentry, or Lightstep)

  • Strong communication skills, especially when working with distributed teams (Sydney, Austin, Kyiv, and San Francisco)

  • Experience with databases, document storage, and object storage systems

  • Experience with configuration management systems such as Puppet, Chef, or Ansible

  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Deployment Manager
