Introduction
As the Engineering Manager for the Vault Cryptosec team, you will lead a new high-performing team responsible for advancing the product’s security, scalability, and enterprise readiness for our self-managed offerings. You will drive Engineering to deliver on cryptographic workflows, including PKI and HSM related functionality. This role will require productive collaboration with the current Engineering team as well as the Design, Security, Product teams and other cross-functional partners to innovate toward true product-market fit.
Your role and responsibilities
- Maintain deep expertise in Vault’s architecture and cryptographic features; guide technical decisions, prioritization, and long‑term scalability.
- Drive execution on feature requests and enhancements that improve security, scalability, and enterprise readiness.
- Partner closely with Product, Design, Security, and other teams to align on vision and deliver customer‑focused solutions.
- Prioritize customer issues and feedback to continuously improve product quality and user experience.
- Establish and refine and improve processes to ensure high availability, reliability, and overall quality.
- Recruit, mentor, and lead a high‑performing, diverse engineering team; foster an inclusive, collaborative culture.

Required technical and professional expertise
- 10+ years of professional engineering experience, including at least 3 years in an engineering management role, leading and scaling product engineering teams delivering complex, customer‑facing systems.
- Proficiency in Go, with working knowledge of additional languages such as Java or C/C++; proven experience building, operating, or overseeing secure, reliable, production‑grade systems.
- Hands‑on experience designing, building, or operating cryptographic systems and services such as PKI, HSMs, TLS, key management, identity and access management (IAM), secure enclaves / trusted execution environments, or related confidentiality and trust technologies
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams through complex, security‑critical technical challenges, make sound architectural and risk‑based decisions, and deliver durable, high‑impact solutions.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to align engineering execution with customer needs, security expectations, and business priorities.
- Proven track record of hiring, mentoring, and developing high‑performing teams in fast‑paced, evolving environments.
Preferred technical and professional experience
- Deep experience designing and operating cloud‑based infrastructure and distributed systems, with strong proficiency across major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Experience supporting security audits and compliance initiatives such as SOC 2, FIPS 140‑2/140‑3, FedRAMP, or similar frameworks, including partnering with security and compliance teams to ensure controls are designed, implemented, and maintained.
- Extensive hands‑on experience with infrastructure‑as‑code and automation workflows, particularly Terraform, to support secure, scalable, and repeatable deployments.
- Practical experience using HashiCorp products such as Vault, Terraform, Consul, Boundary, Nomad, Packer, or Waypoint, particularly in enterprise or self‑managed environments.
