Lime is the world's largest shared electric vehicle company. We’re on a mission to build a future where transportation is shared, affordable and carbon-free. Our electric bikes and scooters have powered 700+ million rides in 250+ cities on 5 continents, replacing an estimated 150+ million car trips. Named a Time 100 Most Influential Company and Fast Company Brand That Matters, Lime continues to set the pace for shared micromobility globally.
Lime is looking for a talented Staff Mechanical Engineer to develop the next generation of lightweight electric vehicles and micromobility infrastructure. Our fleets need to be safe, comfortable, affordable, and fun to provide reliable transportation options for cities across the globe. Designing, building, and operating our own hardware is a strategic advantage that allows us to innovate in this growing market and provide a superior user experience. Lime is expanding our engineering team to execute on a multi-year product roadmap vision.
This role is based in the SF Bay Area where Lime has its San Francisco Hardware Development Lab in SOMA. It is a hybrid role, but it will require you to be in the office as needed for prototyping and testing, which are a regular part of our work.

What You'll Do:

  • Define, design, and deliver breakthrough lightweight electric vehicles and/or shared micromobility infrastructure (e.g. battery packs or docking hardware)
  • Own the development of multiple parts or subsystems concurrently
  • Create detailed and elegant mechanical designs in CAD
  • Build prototypes in our metalworking and 3D print shop
  • Listen to the needs of our Operations team and strive for simplicity in our designs
  • Devise tests and proof of concepts to demonstrate and validate new ideas and drive data-based decision making
  • Conduct root-cause investigations to support improvement of our designs
  • Define, create and release technical documentation using GD&T best practices and our product lifecycle management system
  • Brainstorm creative solutions to mechanical, manufacturing, and reliability problems
  • Work with external vendors and internal teams across the world
  • Support vehicle builds at Asian CMs (likely 2-3 trips/year)

About You:

  • BSc/MSc in Mechanical Engineering (or similar), or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of mechanical design work experience with a portfolio of products you have taken from concept development to mass production
  • Experience as the technical lead or owner of major subsystems for a product
  • High proficiency in CAD software and best practices (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience designing plastic and metal parts for a range of manufacturing processes
  • Proficient at conducting tolerance analysis and creating engineering drawings using GD&T to ensure assembleability
  • Comfortable in a fast paced environment and adapting quickly to new requirements
  • Desire to work hands-on to prototype and validate new designs
  • Curious, collaborative, and hardworking
  • Excited about the future of Micromobility
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bike or other vehicle industry experience
  • Skilled at FEA simulation
  • Talented at CAD surface modeling
  • Track record of driving engineering execution at a system level and bridging functional domains
  • Experience working with overseas suppliers
  • Proficiency in Mandarin
  • Welding experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing robust and durable products capable of withstanding harsh environmental conditions and intensive use
  • If selected to move forward in the interview process, please have a portfolio of products/projects you have worked on available to discuss.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $144,000 - $220,000. Annual performance bonus, equity and benefits may be provided as part of the compensation package, depending on the position offered. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the candidate’s location of residence, the successful candidate's skills, experience and other qualifications.
