The Role
As a Senior Engineering Manager at Stori, you will play a pivotal role in fostering technical excellence, driving innovation, and leading our engineering teams to success. Your dynamic leadership will guide creation of cutting-edge software solutions that align with our business objectives. You will be a hands-on manager for 2-3 squads that each have 4-6 engineers. You will deeply understand Stori's business and the intricacies of your team’s software, enabling you to provide insightful architectural guidance and effectively unblock struggling teams.
To achieve this, you need to focus on three main components:
- Manage and mentor engineers
- Encourage technical excellence
- Provide leadership at Stori
Manage & mentor engineers.
- Give helpful feedback. Both with timely informal direct input and through the formal quarterly performance reviews.
- Discuss the engineer’s goals for technical development and career progression. Give guidance to aid the engineer’s achievement.
- Communicate the engineer's career path. Identify engineers deserving of promotion or pay raise and advocate relatively for them during the assessments.
- Support sustainable high performance by encouraging vacation time when needed.
Encourage technical excellence
- Lead by example as a hands-on Manager, deeply familiar with Stori’s business and your team’s software landscape. Provide actionable architectural insights and assist in resolving challenges faced by teams.
- Drive success by ensuring that squads have well-defined requirements, robust software & data architecture designs, and a clear understanding of their objectives.
- Uphold quality standards across the engineering life cycle, emphasizing performance, security, documentation, and testing. Elevate the visibility of these aspects during sprint planning to underscore their importance.
- Offer valuable guidance to squads on striking the right balance between software delivery speed and quality, fostering a culture where both are prioritized.
- Advocate for the resolution of technical debt when necessary, maintaining a focus on stability and scalability.
Provide leadership at Stori
- Serving as the engineering advocate in team decision-making processes and becoming pivotal in shaping squad visions.
- Champion ambitious OKRs that inspire the team and contribute to crafting the direction and requirements necessary for engineers to succeed.
- Extend your leadership influence beyond the engineering domain, connecting engineers with those seeking assistance and proposing enhancements that elevate the entire Tech Organization.
Experience and education
- Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, information systems, information technology, etc.
- Customer-centric mindset with a proven ability to align technical strategies with customer needs.
- Solid experience in software development background, including design patterns, data structures, and test-driven development
- In-depth knowledge of programming languages such as Golang, Python and Javascript.
- Demonstrated experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and cloud-based architectures.
- Strong track record of leading high-performing engineering teams to deliver innovative solutions
- 6+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
- 6+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling) new and current systems
Required Soft Skills
- Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and navigate ambiguity
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish
- A passion for people management and mentorship
